CHENNAI: Syndicate Bank has started implementing the agriculture debt waiver and relief scheme and will be displaying the final list of beneficiaries on June 23. Kick-starting the programme, George Joseph, Executive Director, addressed all the regional heads and other executives through video conferencing recently. R. Venkateswaran, General Manager, Chennai region, told presspersons here on Wednesday that he visited all the branches, particularly in the rural and semi-urban areas and explained the salient features of the scheme. The above schedule would enable the farmers to get fresh loan for the ensuing kharif season on time. The Chennai region has 84 branches and Coimbatore 64. The Tamil Nadu region covers 16 districts and two districts in Puducherry. Of the 148 branches (Chennai and Coimbatore regions), about 88 branches were covered under the waiver scheme. There were about 16,000 beneficiaries in the Tamil Nadu region, involving an amount of Rs. 54 crore. Of the 16,000 farmers, about 13,500 were small and marginal farmers, Mr. Venkateswaran said. As on March 31, 2008, the percentage of the bank’s total advances to the priority sector as a whole was 46.60 per cent.
