Prohibitory orders still in force Fertilizer stocks arrive HAVERI: The situation in Haveri city, which witnessed violence over shortage of fertilizers, returned to normality on Thursday. Shops and other commercial establishments remained open and educational institutions functioned normally. Vehicular traffic, especially on the Pune-Bangalore National Highway, was normal. However, the fear of violence prevented many people from the villages around Haveri from coming to the city and therefore business was dull for traders. Inspector-General of Police (Northern Range) Raghavendra Auradkar told The Hindu that the situation was peaceful in Haveri and other parts of the district. He said 84 persons had been arrested in connection with the violent protests in the last two days. “Although the situation is under control, prohibitory orders have been clamped as a precautionary measure,” he said. Deputy Commissioner of Haveri P.S. Vastrad said that as the situation was peaceful in several taluks, it had been decided to distribute fertilizers. Because of the violence in Haveri the fertilizer consignments that had been stuck in Hubli had arrived and now the stock in the district was 400 tonnes of DAP. Mr. Vastrad said fertilizers had been sold at Shiggaon, Savanur and Hanagal. However, it had been decided to wait for another day for distribution of fertilizers at other places. He said the district was expecting arrival of 1,000 tonnes of DAP in the next two or three days. Although the requirement was more, the arrivals would at least assure the farmers that DAP was being made available, he said. DGP’s visitThe Director-General of Police R. Srikumar visited the KIMS hospital in Hubli on Thursday and enquired the health of the injured persons, including the police personnel. Speaking to presspersons at the hospital, he said that no senior official had issued the firing order. The police personnel had opened fire to protect themselves, he said.
