Andhra Pradesh to exempt red gram from VAT
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to exempt red gram from the purview of Value Added Tax (VAT).
This decision is part of efforts to supply red gram and palmolein oil at subsidised prices through fair price shops. VAT on red gram is presently pegged at 4 per cent and the decision to waive the tax would cost Rs. 40 crore to the exchequer.
Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy chaired a high-level meeting to review the preparedness of the departments concerned to commence supply of red gram at Rs. 30 a kg (around Rs. 40 a kg in open market) and palmolein oil at Rs. 45 a litre (against the open market price of Rs. 58.50 a litre) from July 15.
