News Analysis
* * In an article “‘India can bring balance to Middle East peace process’” (Op-Ed, June 12, 2008), an interview with President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, the accompanying photograph was credited to Siddharth Varadarajan. He clarifies that the photograph was taken by an official photographer at the President’s office. * * The caption of the accompanying photograph in a report “[Civil Aviation Minister Praful] Patel briefs Manmohan on high rates of taxes” (June 12, 2008) failed to identify an airline chief who was prominent in the photograph. Second from left was Mr. M. Thiagarajan, Managing Director, Paramount Airways. His name was also missing in the report. * * In an article “Resveratrol — the molecule that helps fight ageing” (“Science & Technology” page, June 12, 2008), the seventh paragraph was “The long DNA thread or tape in our genome is rolled up in 23 different bundles called chromosomes. These, in turn, and packaged in compact form called the chromatin ….” . It should have been “… These, in turn, are packaged in compact form called the chromatin ….” * * A sentence in the thirteenth paragraph “The politics of polio” (Op-Ed, June 11, 2008) was “And if it needs endorsement from a foreign channel, it may read the article by V.K. Bhasin in [the] January 2008 issue of Nature Biotechnology, Nature being perhaps the world’s best-known and most respected scientific periodical.” The article mentioned appeared in the January 2008 issue of Nature Medicine. * * In the second paragraph in a report “Alladi Ramakrishnan passes away” (June 9, 2008), the name of the house of Dr. Ramakrishnan, who was the Director of MATSCIENCE in Chennai, was given as “E kamra Nivas (house with a tree).” It should have been “house with a mango tree”. In Sanskrit, “Ek” is one and “Amra” is mango. * * In a Hyderabad report “Energy shortage the larger issue, says Anil Kakodkar” (June 8, 2008), the second paragraph mentioned the National Fuel Complex (NFC), while the seventh paragraph referred to the National Power Corporation of India Limited. These should have been the Nuclear Fuel Complex [Hyderabad] and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited respectively.
