Better surveillance: Microchips being implanted in elephants at Kavumpadi, near Kondotty, on Thursday as part of the Forest Department’s registration of elephants programme. MALAPPURAM: The district-level registration of elephants began at Kavumpadi, Pallikkal, near Kondotty on Thursday. Microchips were implanted in 12 elephants. The chips contain details about the elephant’s weight, height, age, gender, character, health, etc. This part, it will have data about the owner and mahout. A large number of people gathered to witness the implanting of microchips. The elephants were made to lie down and the microchips were implanted in the left side of their neck using a large syringe. The chip contains a 10-digit number, which will be the index for all the information about the elephant and its owner. The Forest Department will keep a record of the implanted chips. According to Forest officials, the enumeration of elephants by implanting chips will prevent fake insurance claims especially by those having several elephants. Edavanna Forest Range Officer K. Manoj and Deputy Range Officer K.C. Balakrishnan were among those who led the elephant process.
