AIADMK for judicial probe

Special Correspondent

Flays police action against party activists

“Police foisting cases on AIADMK members”

Sub Inspector “threatened” party functionary

PUDUCHERRY: The Puducherry unit of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Thursday flayed police action against party activists and pleaded with the Lieutenant Governor to order a judicial probe in this regard.

In a statement here, AIADMK unit secretary A.Anbalagan said that ever since the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) candidate was defeated in the Nellithope Assembly segment, the party had been creating problems to disrupt law and order.

The police had been “foisting cases” against the AIADMK members.

In the case relating to the clash between the activists of the DMK and the AIADMK at a flour mill in the constituency on June 8, the police had opened fire in the air, he said, adding cases had been registered against 10 persons belonging to the AIADMK. Some of these persons were away from the town when the clash occurred, he said.

Though the police claimed that they had to open fire in the air to scare away clashing activists belonging to the two parties, action had not been taken against the DMK men, Mr.Anbalagan said.

The police had acted in a “partisan manner with a political motive, owing to pressure from the DMK”, he said.

In separate memoranda to Lt. Governor, Chief Secretary, Inspector-General of Police and Special Superintendent of Police, AIADMK MLA from Nellithope and secretary of the Jayalalithaa Peravai Omsakthi Sekar said the local Sub Inspector of Orleanpet police opened fire shortly after the situation came under control.

After firing two rounds, the S.I. turned the pistol to him and started threatening him, Mr.Sekar alleged. Cases had been registered against AIADMK activists, including his son and brother-in-law, under seven Sections including Section 380 (theft), Mr. Sekar said.

The complaint lodged by him about the incident on the same evening was not considered by the police, he said, demanding a judicial probe into the incident.
