BERHAMPUR: Primary and upper primary schools in Ganjam district are being renovated under Sarvashikshya Abhiyan. Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) of southern division Satyabrata Sahu inaugurated the new building of Gandhinagar primary school in the city. Lack of proper rooms was compelling students of this school to study outside. There are 3,525 primary and upper primary schools in Ganjam district under the Sarvashikshya Abhiyan. The authorities also found that class rooms were being used store room and kitchen for the midday meal scheme at most of these schools during monsoons. It was adding to problem of space at these schools which usually did not have adequate number of rooms. So, funds have also been released for construction of kitchens in 1,821 primary schools of the district. It has been decided to spend over Rs. 1.92 crore to build boundary walls and rooms at 3,067 schools of the district. The funds meant for the purpose had already been released to 22 blocks of the district. It may be noted that in 2006 the students of upper primary school at Andrasing village of Ganjam district, who were studying outside the class rooms had fallen prey to an attack by a mentally retarded person. The mad man had seriously injured five children. The school had only four classrooms to accommodate 211 students. There was no boundary wall to prevent miscreants from entering the campus.
