THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Food and Civil Supplies C. Divakaran has said the State will achieve self sufficiency in milk in two years. Addressing a press conference in connection with the second anniversary of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government here on Thursday, the Minister said the government was implementing a number of programmes to increase milk production. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, he said, would announce the revised breeding policy on June 16 which would pave way for improvement of the genetic quality of cows. A special package had been prepared for implementation in 73 blocks to address milk shortages. An integrated animal husbandry development programme covering 7,000 farmers was on the anvil. Besides, two high tech dairy farms would be set up in Wayanad and Idukki with investment from overseas Malayalis. Each farm, requiring an investment of Rs.200 crore each, would have 500 cows each. The Kerala Livestock Development Board was setting up two high tech farms costing Rs.4 crore each at Kulathupuzha and Madupetty.
