15 feared dead in mine collapse

Correspondent

Ranchi: Fifteen persons are feared killed when an abandoned mine of the Central Coalfield Limited in the Rajrappa command area under Ramgarh district of Jharkhand collapsed on Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner of Ramgarh A.K. Sinha said no body had been recovered so far.

CPI MP from Hazaribagh Bhuwaneshwar Mehta, however, claimed that 15 persons were buried alive. Talking to this correspondent, he said they were working inside the mine when the roof collapsed.

However, the company authorities refused to own the responsibility for the incident. They said the mine was declared abandoned and the victims were engaged in illegal mining. Company PRO Deepak Kumar said the company had nothing to do with the incident. The victims, mainly belonging to nearby villages, were doing illegal mining, he added.
