University plans Rs. 25-cr. works

KARAIKUDI: Alagappa University plans to create facilities on an outlay of Rs. 23 crore. Vice-Chancellor P. Ramasamy told The Hindu on Wednesdasy that Rs. 20 crore would be spent for the Department of Science alone, considering its importance.

A 10-floor building with modern facilities for teaching, research and laboratory facilities would be constructed. The State Government had given its consent for the proposal. It would be constructed by utilising funds from the Department of Distance Education and other sources. Foundation stone would be laid for the project soon.

The Department of Oceanography and Coast Studies would be developed at a cost of Rs. 25 lakh. First floor over the existing building would be constructed. All facilities at the campus in Thondi would be created.

Mr. Ramasamy said that since the number of students in the university had increased over the years, it was felt that the Controller of Examinations building should be expanded. Hence, a plan was drafted to construct first floor of the existing building at a cost of Rs.1.25 crore. Another Rs.50 lakh would be spent for expanding the main guest house. Woman studies’ centre would be constructed at an estimate of Rs.24 lakh.

Additional building would come up as eastern extension of Department of Bio-Technology at a cost of Rs.13.25 lakh.

Ramakrishnan, Special Officer, Estate Development and Management, said that construction works of various existing projects to the tune of Rs.4.5 crore were almost over. Additional amenities for the multipurpose convocation hall, seminar hall and the Centre for Bio Electronics had been created at a cost of Rs.1.97 crore.

A sum of Rs.99 lakh was spent for constructing a building for men’s hostel for the Alagappa College of Physical Education. The existing building of the Department of Education was expanded at an estimate of Rs.13.25 lakh.
