Need to identify and rehabilitate child workers stressed

Labour Department will issue demand notices of Rs.20,000 on erring employers

Better schooling system required, says INTUC leader


VISKHAPATNAM: Joint Commissioner of Labour M.N. Varahal Reddy underlined the need for identifying the children employed especially in the hazardous occupations and rehabilitating them.

Speaking to mediapersons at the rally on World Day against Child Labour on Thursday, he said under a month-long programme ‘Badibata’, squads had been formed and the offending employees would have to pay penalties. Three rescue teams consisting of 10 officials from Labour Department, Factories Department, non-governmental organizations, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and National Child Labour Project (NCLP) would visit the entire district in rotation.

The focus would be on the children employed as domestic help, in hotels and restaurants.

The Labour Department would issue demand notices of Rs.20,000 on erring employers and the Government would also give Rs.5,000 in respect of each child labour release, he said.

Holding placards and raising slogans against child labour, over 1,000 children from more than 10 child labour schools, another 15 schools and colleges, voluntary organizations, NCLP, SSA and trade union employees took part in the rally flagged off by District Revenue Officer K. Madan Mohan. Beginning from Collectorate the procession moved to Jagadamba Junction and culminated at Prahlada Kalyan Mandapam.

Later at a meeting at Prahalada Kalyana Mandapam INTUC leader Mohan Kumar said that better schooling system was required.

AITUC Secretary Narayana Rao called for strict implementation of minimum wages act and equal pay for equal work.

Assistant Commissioner of Labour-I K. Ella Rao, Assistant Commissioner of Labour-II J.A.S. Krishna Rao, NCLP Project Director P. Mukhalingam, Bal Vikas Foundation Secretary Narava Prakasa Rao, SSA and trade union members attended.
