KLM flight takes off after being grounded

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: In an explicable incident, an aircraft of the KLM operating between Amsterdam and Hyderabad had to be grounded for a day, after it suffered damage while the aerobridge was being connected to it on Tuesday night. The aircraft took off only after the damaged part ‘Pitot’, which senses the air velocity was replaced on Thursday.

Industry sources said the air velocity sensor provides vital inputs to the cockpit crew and the flight commander had insisted on grounding the aircraft till the damaged part was replaced. Authorities confirmed that the sensor got damaged due to improper handling of the aero bridge at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA).

Twenty nine passengers bound for Amsterdam were accommodated in other flights, while others were flown in the same aircraft on Thursday.

Sources said it was very unusual that the aircraft should suffer a damage . The aerobridge is moved and connected only after the aircraft comes to a halt and after shutdown of engines. “This only shows that the crew handling the aero bridge were not properly trained” a source connected to aviation industry opined.
