N. Parthiban from Anakaputhur killed in encounter with militants in 2006

TAMBARAM: A road in Anakaputhur near here has been renamed after Lieutenant N. Parthiban, a young officer from the locality who was killed in an encounter with militants in Kashmir in 2006.

A simple function was held in Anakaputhur on Wednesday evening in connection with the renaming of Anna Nagar First Main Road as “Lieutenant N. Parthiban Salai”.

A sum of Rs.8.50 lakh has been sanctioned from the constituency development funds of Tambaram MLA S.R.Raja for cement-topping the road. Several months ago, the Anakaputhur Municipal Council gave its consent to rename the road where the young officer lived. After getting the approval of the State government, it was decided to go ahead with the same, said Bharathi Kumar, municipal chairman.

Major (retd) V.Natarajan, father of Lt. Parthiban and his family members participated in the function. The young officer had graduated out of the Officers’ Training Academy in March 2006 and was commissioned into 5 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment. In a gunbattle with militants on October 7, 2006, he died in an exchange of gunfire. He was awarded the Keerthi Chakra for his gallantry.

In October 2007, Major Dinesh Raghuraman, a 28-year-old officer from Chromepet, was killed in an exchange of gunfire with militants in Kashmir. At a function organised by civic groups in Radha Nagar sometime ago, an appeal was made to rename the street where the officer lived.
