CHENNAI: More than 20 Indian shoemakers in the Chennai, Ranipet and Ambur regions were trained in best practices in footwear making by two Italian experts. On Thursday, the experts covered all areas of production, including cutting, stitching, shaping and finishing, and suggested best management techniques to increase efficiency and obtain optimum productivity. Three phasesTalking to reporters, UNIDO Chief Technical Adviser Bruno Valanzuolo said: “We have been allotted €3 million to impart best practices to Indian shoemakers, tanners and auto- component makers in three phases. In the first phase, we will concentrate on manufacturing, followed by fashion intervention and quality and machine maintenance.” The second phase of training benefited 23 micro, small and medium enterprises and two representatives from Kanpur. UNIDO would measure the impact through a time-bound assessment, and successful managers would be sent to Italy for two-week training in critical Italian manufacturing techniques. Three criteriaK.V.L. Narasimham, UNIDO Senior Expert, Cluster Development, said three criteria were followed for selecting the participants: growth pattern, position to take technical intervention and their interest to take part in the training programme. Talking about the future of the Chennai leather cluster, A. Sahasranamam, honorary director of the Indian Leather Industry Foundation, said the small and medium entrepreneurs should understand and co-operate with each other for mutual benefit.
