Anuradha, Sumeet win titles

BANGALORE: Anuradha Shrikhande of Maharashtra and Sumeet Reddy of Andhra Pradesh justified their top billing in the under-19 girls’ and boys’ singles finals, in the Union Bank all-India junior ranking badminton tournament here on Thursday.

Anuradha was left guessing by the tall P.V. Sindhu of AP in the first game. But once the Pune girl found her rhythm and her range Sindhu had a lot of catching up to do.

Anuradha used her splendid range of strokes, to leave Sindhu flat-footed by some delicate cross-court drops.

K. Nandagopal raced away winning the first game 21-14 against top seeded Sumeet Reddy, also from AP till Sumeet got going. Sumeet unleashed some deep smashes that left his teammate gasping in the midcourt.

Vaishnavi Iyer continued her upsetting spree to clinch the under-13 girls’ title. Having accounted for two seeds on Wednesday, Vaishnavi scalped third seed Jamuna Rani 21-14, 12-21, 21-14 for the crown.

MP’s Sameer Verma and Tanvi Laad of Maharashtra won the under-16 titles.
