KOCHI: The wait is over for those who swear by free software. The short animation film Big Buck Bunny, made using free software, is slowly picking up download momentum. Code named as Peach Project, this was made by the Blender Institute, part of the Blender Foundation – a non-profit organisation working on open-source programme for three-dimensional modelling. Second projectThis is the second project by Blender Institute. The first film Elephants Dream was also made using free software. Even though the film was officially released in Amsterdam on April 10, the online downloads and files were released on May 30. Those behind the project claim that the whole idea behind it was to demonstrate that barriers to entering 3-D animation could be “lowered tremendously using the on-demand computing platforms”. The film is about a big-hearted rabbit named Big Buck, who is pestered by forest bullies – three rodents – and how he takes his revenge on them. The film follows the classical cartoon tradition of bullying and counter-attacks. ScreeningAnd now, the online download has charged up the advocates of free software here. The film will be screened at the next meeting of the Cochin wing of Indian Linux Users Group (ILUG) on June 22. They are planning to hold a screening for public later. For those using free software, the revenge of Big Buck Bunny could be a political message. No wonder they are waiting anxiously for the game based on the characters to follow.
