Corporation in touch with a Chennai company Distribution of plastic buckets to continue
KOCHI: Plastic waste management is high in the agenda of the Kochi Corporation these days. The civic body is seeking ways for managing the plastic waste and is in touch with various agencies in this regard, said C.K. Manisankar, Deputy Mayor of Kochi Corporation. The Corporation has approached a firm in Chennai, which has been making PVC pipes, buckets and mugs out of plastic waste. The firm had been purchasing plastic waste from the market at a time when the Corporation was finding it difficult to dispose of the plastic waste, said Mr. Manisankar. The Corporation officials have been directed to float tenders inviting proposals for setting up plastic recycling unit in Kochi. The idea is to set up the unit in the private-public participation mode, he said. Though several agencies had come up with proposals for treatment of waste and alternative waste treatment technologies at the time of the garbage crisis, nothing was heard of them later, he said. The distribution of plastic buckets for residents for segregated collection of waste will be completed by the month-end. The Corporation had distributed 26,000 buckets by now. The plan is to distribute around 1.25 lakh plastic buckets.
