UDF councillors hold protest meeting in front of the Corporation office System not in place to collect segregated waste, say Opposition Council members KOCHI: The Untied Democratic Front (UDF) Councillors disrupted the Corporation Council proceedings and walked out of the hall on Thursday protesting against the absence of the Mayor and the Corporation Secretary at the session. The Councillors aired their protest by displaying placards against the civic administrators’ failure to remove garbage from the city streets. They also burned incense inside the Council hall in a symbolic act of fumigating the city. Mayor Mercy Williams and Secretary Mini Antony were attending the conciliatory meeting convened by the District Collector to sort out the garbage-dumping crisis at Kalamassery at the time of the meeting. As the opposition Councillors stood up and raised slogans, Deputy Mayor C.K. Manisankar, who chaired the session, declared the agenda passed and ended the Council proceedings abruptly. The UDF Councillors later held a protest meeting at the courtyard of the Corporation office. “No back-up provided”Later, A.B. Sabu, UDF parliamentary party leader of the Corporation, told media persons that the civic administrators had deceived the people of Kochi by not providing the required backup for moving into the segregated waste collection system in the city. Though the people started segregated collection of waste following the call of the authorities, the administrators failed to put in place a system for collection of waste. The Corporation officials also withdrew the waste bins that were provided at various centres for the people to dump waste. This has forced the residents to go back to the earlier practice of mixing the garbage and dumping it on streets, he said. The parliamentary party meeting of the Congress will be held on Friday to chart out the future course of action, Mr. Sabu said. Congress Councillors David Parambithara, Johnson Master and K.R. Premakumar were also present.
