THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Helping students make an informed choice about engineering/medical courses and exposing them to the nuances of the computerised system they will use to make those choices; these are the main aims of the pre-admission guidance programme being organised by The Hindu-EducationPlus in Thiruvananthapuram on June 15. Registration for the programme that will be held at the Tagore Theatre, Vazhuthacaud, will close in a couple of days. Health activist C.R. Soman will make a presentation on MBBS and allied courses and on emerging areas of study and research in medicine. On the engineering front, it will be career guidance expert B.S. Warrier who will talk the students through the process of making the correct choice of courses and colleges. In addition to this, he will also detail the areas of study that each branch of engineering entails. A major highlight of the programme will be the presentation - on the actual allotment process - made by a top official from the office of the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations. Participants will be told how to go about registering their options and, more importantly, how to sidestep certain common mistakes that students have made over the past two years while registering their course-college options. Soft skillsIn recognition of the pivotal role that soft skills play in landing a candidate a good job, the EducationPlus programme will also feature a special presentation on the subject by an expert from the Triumphant Institute of Management Education (TIME), who are the co-sponsors of the programme. A representative of the State Bank of Travancore will showcase various loan schemes for candidates seeking admission to professional courses. The event is being organised in association with the SBT. There will also be a question and answer session during which the panellists will answer individual queries. A handbook providing a comprehensive overview will be provided free to each participant. Entry to the programme is on a first-come-first-served basis and a student can register for the event in advance on payment of a registration fee of Rs.50. Registrations can be also be provisionally sought by email, in which case the actual registration will be made at the programme venue.
