NEW DELHI: A minor has been detained and his 20-year-old accomplice arrested on charges of kidnapping a mentally challenged son of a businessman at Bhajanpura here this past Tuesday. According to the police, Anjum Kumar of Subhash Vihar registered a case with the police complaining that his six-year-old son who had gone out to play in the evening had not returned. The complainant said he had also received an anonymous call saying the boy had been kidnapped. A few hours later, Mr. Kumar received another call demanding a ransom of Rs.50,000 for safe release of his son. A police team in plain clothes took position near Gamri Road where the kidnappers had asked Mr. Kumar to reach with the ransom money. Around 10-30 p.m., two persons along with the kidnapped child reached the rendezvous point and the complainant signalled to the police team waiting nearby. The kidnappers, however, escaped under the cover of darkness leaving behind the child. During investigation, the police found that the two ransom calls on the cell phone of the victim’s father had been made from a public booth in North Ghonda. Booth owner Bijender told the police that three persons along with a child had come to his shop to make a call. He also provided physical description of the accused which led to the detention of a minor staying in the neighbourhood of the victim. His accomplice Rahul was later arrested at his instance. Another accused, Munna, is absconding. During interrogation, the accused purportedly told the police that they wanted to make easy money.
