Udhagaandalam: In implementing welfare schemes for women, Tamil Nadu is in the forefront, said the Khadi Board Minister, K. Ramachandran, while distributing benefits under the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Marriage Assistance Scheme at a function organised by the Social Welfare Department here on Friday.

Pointing out that the scheme, which had come into being many years ago was the brainchild of Chief Minister Karunanidhi, he said that the per head assistance which was initially rupees Rs. 5,000 was now Rs. 20,000.

It reflected the concern of the Karunanidhi government for girls hailing from poor families.

Stating that poll promises were being systematically fulfilled by the Chief Minister, he said that all the schemes were for the benefit of those belonging to the weaker sections of the society.

Thanks to the free colour TV scheme, tribal communities like the Kurumbas, Irulas and Paniyas who resided deep in the forests now have electricity. The Chief Minister firmly believed in social justice.

The Udhagamandalam MLA, B. Gopalan, who presided over the function, hoped that the implementation of the marriage assistance scheme would be suitably modified and the benefits extended to economically weak families in other communities also.

The Coonoor MLA, A. Soundarapandian, said that all the schemes being implemented were farsighted. The Member, District Planning Committee, K.A. Mustaffa, also spoke.
