Officials to be held responsible for non-implementation To go on surprise visits to offices BANGALORE: Newly appointed Chairman of the Kannada Development Authority “Mukhyamanthri” Chandru on Friday warned civil servants of taking action against them if they ignored the implementation of Kannada as administrative language. Speaking to reporters after assuming office, Mr. Chandru expressed concern that it had not been possible to fully implement Kannada as administrative language in the State. He said he would first request the erring officials to properly implement Kannada. As the second step, he would instruct them to follow the Kannada norms failing which he would recommend to the Government to initiate stringent action against them. He would fix responsibility of implementation of Kannada on top-ranking officials. The Chief Secretary would be responsible for implementation of Kannada at the State level, while the Divisional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and Tahsildars would be responsible for Kannada implementation at the divisional, district and taluk levels. He urged the government to ensure that all its files were in Kannada. In this regard, he appealed to the Ministers to draft all legislation and rules in Kannada first unlike the present practice of translating them from English. Even their notes on the files should be in Kannada, he said. Surprise visitMr. Chandru told The Hindu that he would undertake surprise visits to various government offices to know if they were implementing Kannada norms. During the visit, he would verify the files. His surprise inspection visits would also cover the shops and commercial establishments which failed to display Kannada signboards. He appealed to the general public to lodge their complaints, if any, with him regarding the failure by any government organisation to implement Kannada as administrative language. He said he would also bring pressure on the Union Government to provide classical language status to Kannada. He would try to convince the State Government to implement the Sarojini Mahishi committee report, which has recommended reservation in jobs to Kannadigas. Earlier, Mr. Chandru took charge as KDA chairman from Prof. Siddalingaiah.
