This Day That Age
The Government of Lebanon declared an emergency in some of the areas skirting the rebel-held regions as the security situation in the country deteriorated further. A military statement issued in Beirut on June 12 had stated that the Lebanese army battled fiercely with the rebels in Tripoli and that the rebels raided the army positions, and were finally driven back towards their stronghold in Tripoli old city after exchanges lasting several hours. Casualty figures were not known. Security forces and pro-Government elements fought bitterly against Druze tribesmen who have been attempting to cut off the main Beirut-Damascus road, according to reports received in Beirut.
