Corrections and clarifications

* * The third paragraph in a report “Shanghai on hold” (“Newscape” page, June 11, 2008) was “More than 100,000 high school students in the city were this past weekend sitting at what is the world’s largest state-organised examinations”, leading to a query on the figure quoted. Ananth Krishnan clarifies that the national college entrance examinations, sat by 10 million Chinese students this year, are the largest state-organised examinations in the world, as the article correctly points out. These are the exams that are referred to in the article — 100,000 was just the number of students in Shanghai alone. (In some editions, the article had the heading “Shanghai, with bated breath”.)

* * The heading of a tennis report (“Sport”, June 13, 2008) was “Roger Federer stretched in his first match of the grass season; easy for Andy Roddick”. It was Federer’s second grass court match. (The report was on the Gerry Weber Open tennis quarterfinals.)

* * The fourteenth paragraph in a football report “Spanish Armada sinks Russia” (“Sport”, June 12, 2008) was “In the second half, Spain’s coach Luis Aragones brought Torres for Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas to try to close up the middle of the park.” It should have been Fabregas for Torres as Fabregas scored a goal in the 91st minute. (The report was on a Euro 2008 match.)

* * The fifteenth paragraph in a football report “Oranje wave swamps Azzuri” (“Sport”, June 11, 2008) was “Italy’s shocked coach Roberto Donadoni, who had presided over the defeat to Brazil in 1970, just wanted to look ahead.” The agency report is wrong as the Italian coach was born in 1963 and would have been only seven during the 1970 match against Brazil. (The report was on Euro 2008 in the Stade de Suisse.)
