Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Friday said the government would take necessary steps to make Puducherry hut-free. At the inauguration of the Government Girls Hostel building at Madagadipet, he said the government would work towards converting huts into concrete houses soon. “The funds allocated under the Special Component Plan (SCP) will be appropriately spent for the uplift of the Scheduled Castes. Their educational status and housing facility should improve so that the entire community improves,” Mr. Rangasamy said. The hostel has been constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.42 crore, of which Rs. 1.06 crore was given by the Central government. Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Planning V. Narayanasamy said Puducherry had 27 per cent persons in the below the poverty line category in the last six to seven years. “Despite annual fund allocation of Rs. 600 to Rs. 700 crore for improving the status of BPL persons, the population still continues to be at 27 per cent. The fund utilisation for this should be monitored,” he said. The funds allocated under SCP should be utilised for providing housing facilities, safe drinking water, electricity connection and schools.
