Saina in semifinals

New Delhi: National Champion Saina Nehwal advanced to the semifinals of Singapore Open badminton tournament, beating Indonesian Firdasari Adrianti 21-16, 20-22, 21-16 in a hard-fought encounter on Friday.

In a fierce contest that lasted 47 minutes, Saina pocketed the first game but the Indian squandered the lead going down 20-22 in the next game.

However, Saina got her act together in the decider and held her nerve in crucial moments to seal the third game 21-16 and set up a semifinal clash with fifth seed and Athens Olympic bronze medallist Mi Zhou of China.

Zhou beat third seeded compatriot Chen Wang 21-17, 21-19 in the other quarterfinal. — PTI
