What is the basic yardstick for choosing a good college/branch?

The best option is to go for IITs and NITs, then University colleges and then private deemed universities and then private colleges, in that order of preference. Choose your favourite branch in a good college with qualified faculty members, latest laboratory equipment and the right academic ambience. If you are particular about a branch, then go for even a moderately-reputed college, provided you have the capability to make extra efforts to fill the gap.

Civil Engineering ruled the roost a couple of decades back and now it is the time for the circuit branches. How long will the boom exist?

Of late, students generally prefer circuit branches like ECE, IT, CSE and EEE. However, indications are that the job market is reaching a saturation point. That does not mean there will be no IT jobs in future, but the abnormal boom witnessed during the last decade is taking a dip and a ‘correction’ is taking place.

What are the prospects of Biotechnology? When most papers pertain to biology, do you think an MPC student can cope with them?

Biotechnology is an emerging area. It has lot of scope for career growth. But B.Tech Biotechnology is not advisable for those seeking quick jobs. As it is research-oriented, you have excellent opportunities if you pursue an M.Tech or M.S. in Biotechnology.

Though biotechnology is about biology, mathematics background is essential. That means, it is about mathematics orientation in a life sciences subject. However, starting the course requires a lot of investment in the form of expensive laboratory equipment and facilities.

Is it advisable to join deemed universities?

A good college affiliated to a state university is a better option. However, some deemed universities also have good infrastructure and excellent placement record. Keep in mind that a student’s job-worthiness and position in the job market will improve if the degree is from a reputed college.

Can girl students take mechanical engineering?

Girls can study anything. Women can work in areas like chip design etc, where one has to deal with skilled labour. If you feel difficult to tackle such situations, better choose electronics or allied areas.

What are the prospects in Chemical engineering?

Chemical Engineering is a very good branch. Unlike IT, civil and mechanical which offer a wide range of job opportunities, this course is not a very versatile branch as it is confined to a very few industries dealing in chemicals. Those choosy about a career in it can go for it without hesitation and make a career, but it is difficult to change profession midway.

What is ECM? What are the prospects?

ECM is a combination of Electronics & Communications and Mechanical Engineering. However, it is offered only in three or four colleges. The problem is that it does not allow prospects in higher education.

Several colleges make tall claims of 100 per cent placement. How can we believe them?

Companies visiting campuses for placement take only those who pass in first class, which will be around 60 p.c. of the total class strength. So, 100 p.c. here means placement for all the first class graduates. We can sieve the chaff from the grain by finding out this figure.

Can a medicine student seek a job or practice outside his state?

An MBBS degree is recognized across India and hence there is no need to write any exam to get into other states. However, a student who does MBBS in one state becomes a non-local in other states and hence it will be difficult for him to pursue post graduate education.

What are the prospects in doing Ayurvedic and Homoeopathy courses?

Traditional Indian medicine is another emerging area. There are reputed colleges in Hyderabad offering the courses. Patients, especially from the rural areas, prefer to take Ayurvedic and Homeopathy mode of treatment. Private practice is a very fetching option here.

If we prefer to go for degree courses, which is the better option?

Apart from MBBS, there are a number of options like dental, veterinary, nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy etc. B.Sc. Biotechnology, Microbiology and Biochemistry are also there. Medical Lab Technology and Nursing have immediate employment opportunities.

Will dental course offer a great career?

Dental sciences is one area that promises you a great career. After a bachelor’s degree in dental sciences, there are nine branches at the PG level such as Oral Surgery, Pedodontics etc. that allows vertical growth. Private practice is a good option. As beauty and health consciousness are growing especially in cities, the present number of dentists is nowhere enough to meet the demand.

40 seats each are available in the Government Dental Colleges in Hyderabad and Vijayawada. Similarly, each of the nine private colleges in the state offer 70 seats, of which 30% are offered in ‘C’ category.

Will nursing be a promising option? Can boys take nursing?

A minimum pass in Intermediate is enough to get into nursing. Nurses are in great demand in the South-East, Gulf countries, Europe and the USA.
