Trawling ban from tomorrow

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government will be enforcing a ban on trawling during this monsoon also for conservation of fish resources as in the previous year.

The ban will be in effect from the midnight of June 14 to July 31, according to an order issued by the government.

An official release said that traditional fishermen would be permitted to undertake pelagic fishing using mechanised boats during the ban period. District Collectors would be the nodal officer for implementing the ban.

The release said that deep sea fishing stood banned in the exclusive economic zone of the country during monsoon as per an order issued by the Centre. Boats from the other States operating in Kerala coast had been asked to leave the coast.

It said that 24-hour control rooms had started functioning in all districts. Assistance could be sought from the Coast Guard by calling toll free telephone number 1554.
