CHANDIGARH: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has taken exception to the reported statement made by the Director-General of Police while briefing the media about the rape by two policemen at the Rohtak police station and the subsequent suicide by the victim that “out of a 47,000-strong force some persons can always commit such an offence”. In a press release issued at Rohtak on Friday, the Haryana CPI (M) secretary Inderjit Singh said such remarks made to a news TV channel were highly unbecoming and would give a very wrong signal to both the public and the rank and file among the police. Taking note of the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s observation in a suo motu cognizance of the rape and suicide case that the DGP “could and cannot absolve himself in this matter”, Mr. Singh said the police chief should himself relinquish office or the Government should replace him to restore the common man’s faith in the law and order machinery. Women activists of the Indian National Lok Dal staged a massive protest outside the Haryana Police headquarters at Panchkula near here on Friday demanding resignation of the Chief Minister and registration of criminal cases against senior police officers who failed to provide justice to a married woman who was raped by two policemen and who subsequently committed suicide.
