LUCKNOW: Dreaded dacoit Nadiya alias Teja and his sidekick Sonveer were gunned down in a pre-dawn encounter with the police in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh on Friday. The encounter, which began at 4-45 a.m. lasted about an hour in Barua Ki Khaar. The desperado, who was active in the Chambal and Yamuna ravines in Etawah, Auraiya and Kanpur Nagar districts, carried a reward of Rs.30,000 on his head. The brigand shot into headlines in March this year after his gang killed five members of a Dalit family in Aminabad village under the Ekdil police station area on the night of March 12-13. The killing of the Dalits assumed political overtones with UP Chief Minister Mayawati paying a visit to Aminabad village on March 14. The Chief Minister announced the Government’s decision to bear all the expenses of the four daughters of the deceased, Arjun Singh, related to their education and marriage. She also ensured security for the remaining members of Arjun Singh’s family. Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi visited Aminabad village the next day and spent some time with the Dalit famly. ADG (Law and Order) Brij Lal told newsmen on Friday afternoon that the pre-dawn encounter was executed by a police team led by the Etawah SSP, S. R. S. Aditya. Mr. Aditya learnt about the gang’s movement in the Yamuna ravines in Takrupura near Barua Ki Khaar from informers. He was also apprised of the gang’s movement by the SP of Auraiya, Mr. Lal said. A factory-made rifle, a 12-bore SBBL factory made gun, used and live cartridges and some cash was recovered from the slain brigands. The gang leader was wanted in 14 cases of murder, loot and dacoity.
