BHUABNESWAR: Internationally acclaimed Indian sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has won the first prize at the USF World Double Championship at Berlin on Thursday. The USA and The Netherlands finished second and third respectively in the competition. The event was hosted by Berlin-based Sandsation. Sudarsan made 25-feet high sand sculpture on the theme of global warming that portrayed a polar bear on top of a globe and praying ‘save my family’. Beneath it were three different faces representing one each from Africa, Europe and Asia. The master sculptor along with his student Jitendra Kishore Jagadev represented India in this world championship that had entries from Denmark, Germany, USA, UK, Spain, Holland, Japan, Belgium, Morocco, Italy and France. The competition commenced on June 5 coinciding with the World Environment Day observations and continued for a week. The sculptures would remain for public display for a fortnight. First IndianIncidentally Sudarsan was the first Indian to win a first prize in the same competition in 2005 by creating a 15-feet high sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi with three monkeys depicting world peace. The artist recently claimed the coveted ‘People’s Choice Prize’ at the Moscow international sand sculpture championship. So far this Puri-based Oriya artist has participated in 35 international sand sculpture championships and has brought laurels for the nation.
