Students with parental income less than a lakh will get full fee waiver at post-matriculation level NEW DELHI: A delegation of the Democratic Teachers’ Front and the Students’ Federation of India has had a meeting with Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental to discuss various issues ahead of the coming new academic year which is beginning next month. The delegation demanded implementation of the post-matriculation scholarship scheme for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes under a special scheme of the Union Social Welfare Ministry. “Under this scheme, every Scheduled Caste student whose parental income is less than Rs.1 lakh per year is eligible for a full fee waiver for admission to courses at the post-matriculation level. The University, however, has not been implementing this scheme. Prof. Pental has assured us that he will do his best to ensure it is done from this academic session itself,” claimed DTF secretary Rajeev Kumar Kunwar. The delegation apprised the Vice-Chancellor of “continuous” fee increases in colleges and under-graduate hostels. “Such unbridled fee hikes act as a barrier for students belonging to the economically weaker sections and go against the basic principle of egalitarianism in education. It is not only the college fee that has skyrocketed but also the hostel fee that has surpassed all imaginable limits. The Vice-Chancellor assured us that special provisions would be made for waiving off the hostel fee for the economically disadvantaged students,” said Mr. Kunwar.
