KARAIKAL: The four-day annual ‘Maangani’ (mango) festival of the Karaikal Ammaiyar temple in Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry begins on Monday (June 16) morning with Vinayaka pooja and the main ‘Tirukalyanam’ of Karaikal Ammaiyar will be performed at 11.30 a.m. on Tuesday (June 17). ProcessionThe ‘Bikshadanar’ (Lord Siva) procession will be held on Wednesday (June 18) when the devotees throw mangoes which is considered as ‘prasadam’. Arrangements madeCollector N. Vasantha Kumar told The Hindu on Friday that the district administration, municipal and temple authorities had made elaborate arrangements for the devotees attending the festival. The ‘Maangani’ festival is celebrated on the ‘Pournami’ day (full moon day) in the Tamil month of ‘Aani’ (June-July). The main shrine is ‘Punithavathiar’ known as `Karaikal Ammaiyar’, one of the 63 Nayanmars, an ardent devotee, blessed by Lord Siva. Karaikal Ammaiyar sang hymns in praise of Lord Siva.
