BJP refutes Chidambaram’s charge

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday charged the Finance Minister P. Chidambaram with misleading the people by claiming that the BJP and NDA-ruled States had sought lesser Minimum Support Price (MSP) for paddy.

Senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu released copies of letters written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last October-November by the Chief Ministers of Chhattisgarh and Orissa, recommending an MSP of Rs. 1,000 a quintal for paddy.

Mr. Naidu said that the Principal Secretary of Madhya Pradesh also wrote on April 16 to the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, expressing the State government’s concurrence with the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices for Kharif crops this year.

The commission had recommended Rs. 1,000 a quintal for paddy and Rs. 1,050 for grade `A’ paddy.

“The UPA government is insensitive to the sufferings of the farmers and the poor people. We will take this issue to the people,” Mr. Naidu told reporters.
