People clash with police near Rameswaram
Staff Reporter
RAMANATHAPURAM: Tension prevailed in Rameswaram on Friday following a clash between the police and a group of people.
The group had earlier been denied permission for a cultural event held as part of a temple festival at Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar Nagar near Rameswaram.
The mob hurled stones at police personnel. Three police personnel were injured.
A case of attempt to murder was registered against the attackers.
Over 600 persons blocked traffic on the Rameswaram-Dhanushkodi Road, protesting against the registering of the cases.
They also put up blockades at several places. Though the agitation was withdrawn following persuasion from Revenue officials, it was restarted.
Traffic flow was affected for a few hours. Collector R. Kirlosh Kumar said the situation had been brought under control.
