NEW DELHI: The government has reportedly agreed to give an additional Rs. 750 a month to all contract workers working at the Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited in a move to end the 12-day long strike at the plant. It also assured the workers that it would regularise jobs of as many contract workers as possible. This was agreed upon at a meeting held between Minister of State for Coal Santosh Bagrodia and a delegation of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) leaders, led by its general secretary Gurudas Dasgupta here on Friday. The government also agreed to provide medical facilities to all 13,000 contract workers on a par with regular employees and facilitate setting up of labour cooperatives, Mr. Dasgupta told The Hindu after the meeting. The AITUC is spearheading the strike. ``We are satisfied with the outcome of the meeting and hope the strike would end soon, though the ultimate decision lies with the workers,” he said. The formalities of the process of implementation of the decisions, if accepted by the workers, would be carried out in conciliation with the Labour Ministry, Mr. Dasgupta said.
