Plea against officer conducting Tamil Film Producers Council poll

CHENNAI: Justice V.Ramasubramanian of the Madras High Court has ordered notice returnable by June 18 on an application seeking to restrain A.V.M.Murugan from acting as election officer (EO) for the election of office-bearers and the executive committee members of Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) slated for July 6. counsel appearing for TFPC sought time to file counter. The court said counsel for the applicant should take notice to Mr.Murugan.

In the petition, Hennry of T.Nagar and 15 others prayed the court to appoint a retired Judge of the High Court as a receiver to conduct the election. The petitioners said in the last elections held on July 8, 2006, the same EO started counting the votes the same evening. During the counting, without following the procedures he had been announcing the results piecemeal. Consequently, unscrupulous elements entered the counting room and damaged the vote box and burnt some of the ballot papers. The EO failed to follow the doctrine of fairness while acting as EO. The elected office-bearers and the executive committee members failed to conduct the AGM.

The same person has been appointed as EO for the forthcoming election for 2008-2010. If he assumes the office of EO, he would not follow the procedure. The applicants said they apprehended that no fair election would be conducted.
