Schools to get colour TVs, DVD players

Shastry V. Mallady

MADURAI: In a move to improve the education infrastructure, the State government has initiated steps to supply a colour television set and a DVD player to all 28,000 government schools in the State.

The initiative, to be implemented through the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), will provide 21-inch colour television sets, DVD players and a table to every government primary, middle, high school and higher secondary school in the State, according to a note sent to district-level officials by State Project Director M.P. Vijayakumar.

Official sources here told The Hindu on Friday that the communication was received from Chennai on Tuesday asking district coordinators to furnish data pertaining to schools.

Supply by ELCOT

The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) will procure and supply the sets after it receives funds from the districts, an official said.

According to the price list given by the government, each colour television set costs Rs.3,784 while a DVD player is priced at Rs.1,170. A table costs Rs.1,300. After making provisions for sales tax, service charges etc, the final figure for all the three items put together is Rs.7,226.
