Backward Classes panel report on June 30
Special Correspondent
On review of criteria for determination of creamy layer among OBCs
CHENNAI: The National Commission for Backward Classes will submit its report on review of the criteria for determination of creamy layer among Other Backward Classes (OBCs) to the Centre on June 30, according to its chairperson S. Ratnavel Pandian.
He told The Hindu over phone on Friday that the Commission collected materials at a meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday with chairpersons of several State Backward Classes Commission and State Secretaries of the Backward Classes Welfare Departments.
Some States had suggested that the income limit be raised to Rs.4 lakh-Rs.6 lakh from the present Rs.2.5 lakh, said the Commission chairman.
At present, the income limit for determining the creamy layer among the BCs was Rs.2.5 lakh, which was fixed in March 2004. At that time, it was also decided that the task of further periodic revision would be taken up every three years or earlier if the situation demanded.
Six months ago, the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment made a reference to the Commission in this regard.
