VELLORE: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has started from this year a three-month residential course to impart soft skills to students, according to Ved Kumar Jain, president of the institute. Talking to newspersons at the new building of the Vellore branch of the Southern India Regional Council (SIRC) of the ICAI at Krishna Nagar here on Friday, Mr. Jain said that soft skills to be imparted during the course included communication skills, personality development and ability to participate in group discussions. The ICAI has obtained land in Jaipur and Bangalore to construct its own campuses for conducting the course and to accommodate the students. The institute is planning to construct four such campuses in the country, to cater for the students from various regions. At present, the course is being conducted in Faridabad. Resource persons from the National Academy of Administration, Mussouri and the Indian Institute of Management are conducting the course. “While initially, it would be an optional course, it would be made mandatory for all CA students once the infrastructure facilities are put in place”, he said. The ICAI president said the institute would provide a total grant of Rs.50 lakh, comprising Rs.25 lakh each for purchase of land and construction of building for each branch. Out of the 118 branches of ICAI, 80 have own buildings. This year the institute is encouraging all its branches in the country to have own buildings. In addition to this, the ICAI is also encouraging the branches to have their own computer laboratories.
