BANGALORE: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Karnataka organised the first ‘Skill Summit 2008’ on the theme “Building Skills for Employability,” here on Thursday. The summit opened with a call to improve the skills among the youth to make them employable. Former chairman of CII Karnataka and convener, Industry Institute Interaction Panel, N. Reguraj, said that the economic changes in the country in recent years had spurred the employment market to a great extent. He said that the industrial training institutes (ITIs) should give a strong push to skill development. Skill had become a singular factor for employability in the job market and ITIs should upgrade their facilities. He said the Government had provided Rs. 2.5 crore for upgrading ITIs in the State and had cleared the way for private participation in upgrading and running the ITIs. The CII itself had adopted 11 ITIs in Karnataka, and was working closely with the State Government on various projects and with the Central Government on the National Skill Development Policy, which is to be placed in Parliament shortly. Minister of Labour B.N. Bache Gowda said that the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model that had been cleared for development of ITIs had evoked a good response from industries. The Institute Management Committees oversee the development of it is. This model would make ITIs popular skill-learning centres for the youth, he hoped. In the next fiscal, the Government would include 30 ITIs for upgrading.
