NEW DELHI: A day after the India Meteorological Department announced the likelihood of an early arrival of the monsoon in the Capital, Delhiites were treated to pre-monsoon showers on Friday. A total of 4.2 mm of rain was recorded up to 5-30 p.m. on Friday, bringing the maximum temperature down by seven degrees to settle at 33 degrees Celsius. However, the humidity level shot up to 91 per cent, leading to muggy weather. The temporary relief from the heat is expected to continue over the coming week. IMD Director B. P. Yadav said: “The prevailing weather conditions of rainfall, cloudiness and thunderstorms are expected to continue over the northern plains including Delhi for at least the next four to five days.” The Capital, which has experienced one of the coolest summers in recent times, had received record rain in May. Elaborating on the progress of the monsoon towards the Capital, Mr. Yadav said: “The monsoon has already covered many parts of Gujarat, East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, eastern Uttar Pradesh and we expect it to reach Delhi and North West India over the next 48 hours.”
