Delhi faced a shortfall of about 500 MW of power Though rain prevents demand from escalating NEW DELHI: Intermittent rain proved a boon for the Delhi Government’s Power Department on Friday as the dip in temperature prevented the demand for power from escalating. As the city faced a shortfall of about 500 MW of power because of a decline in the hydro-power generation in North India, the power distribution companies had to resort to load-shedding. According to the Power Department officials, about 400-450 MW of load-shedding was carried out in the first half of the day for about an hour to stave off a grid collapse. With the entire northern region facing a power shortfall, most of the States overdrew power from the grid, resulting in a dip in frequency. The Northern Region Load Dispatch Centre issued a warning to the States to maintain grid discipline to prevent a grid collapse. “Owing to heavy deposit of silt in the rivers, production of power at the Nathpa Jhakri, Uri and Salal hydroelectricity plants was severely affected. While Nathpa Jhakri continues to remain shut, the Salal and Uri plants resumed production later in the day. Delhi is losing out on about 180 MW from Nathpa Jhakri alone,” said sources in the Power Department. On Friday the maximum load recorded was 3,507 MW at 11-21 a.m., the city generated 1,162 MW of power, and was forced to overdraw from the Northern Grid. Power cuts as a result of less power supply were reported from several parts of the city including Mayur Vihar, Janakpuri, Tilak Nagar, Dwarka, and other parts of West and South-West Delhi.
