Probe ordered

NEW DELHI: The Delhi police on Friday ordered an inquiry into the mysterious death of a 45-year-old businessman in Tilak Nagar after his family alleged that he had died of injuries inflicted by the police.

Nirmal Singh died on Thursday evening when a police team reached his house to execute a non-bailable warrant issued against him by a Tis Hazari metropolitan magistrate over the bouncing of a cheque. The victim’s family alleged that the police demanded bribe from them and beat up the businessman when they refused to give in to their demand.

Denying the allegations, Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said: “When the police, accompanied by the complainant Ashok Khandelwal, reached his house to execute the court order, the accused locked himself up in the bathroom. When the door was broken open, he was found unconscious. He was later declared brought dead at Guru Gobind Singh Hospital.”
