34 cents of land to be acquired in Vanchiyoor Welfare plan for 52 slum colonies Thiruvananthapuram: The Corporation Council which met here on Friday decided to acquire 34 cents of land in the Vanchiyoor village to set up a parking area for vehicles. The meeting approved a resolution seeking High Court approval to acquire the land located on the road from AKG Centre to Spencer Junction. In 1999, the Corporation had earmarked the plot for the establishment of a Hi-Tech Centre under the Plan Campaign. The landowner had moved the High Court then. Moving the resolution in the council, Town Planning standing committee chairman P. Harikumar said the vehicle boom in the city had made it imperative to provide parking space. The meeting approved a list of 52 slum colonies to be restored under the Basic Services for the Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme. A major portion of the Rs.85-crore outlay will be spent on slums in the coastal wards. The council adopted a resolution moved by Welfare standing committee chairman P. Rajendra Das seeking the consent of the Central government to issue identity cards for beneficiaries of the Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension scheme. Mr. Das said the government had directed the Corporation to stop issuing identity cards for beneficiaries of welfare schemes following the revision of norms for the old-age pension scheme. This, he said, would put the brakes on the local body’s efforts to ensure transparency and avoid irregularities in disbursement of assistance to the needy. The meeting appealed to the Travancore Devaswom Board to clean up the polluted Sreekanteswaram temple tank in view of the health hazards to the local people.
