Fee: talks remain inconclusive

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With managements of private self-financing colleges and the State government sticking to their respective positions on the fee for various categories of seats, the possibility of a fee-seat pact for engineering colleges receded on Friday.

Talks between Education Minister M.A. Baby and representatives of the Kerala Self- Financing Engineering College Managements’ Association held here remained inconclusive. Association representatives will meet Mr. Baby at 11 a.m. on Sunday. A meeting of the Cabinet sub-committee on self-financing colleges will be held that day at 10 a.m.

Association president G.P.C. Nayar told presspersons after the talks that the managements would not go back from the fee package announced by the P.A. Mohammed committee which was appointed by the government. The committee had recommended Rs.40,000 as fee and Rs.75,000 as deposit.

“The government wants us to stick to the fee fixed for last year. The Minister told us that he would place our demands before the sub-committee. He also told us he did not have much hope that they would be accepted,” he said. Association working president Younus Kunhu said even if there was no pact with the government the managements would ‘give’ 50 per cent of the seats to the government.
