MLC for experts’ panel on CBSE syllabus

Staff Reporter

He urges government to make a comparative study

Kakinada: While maintaining that state syllabus is best suited for high schools in Andhra Pradesh, Member of Legislative Council Chukka Ramaiah suggested to the government to constitute an experts’ committee to weigh the pros and cons of introducing CBSE syllabus before taking the final decision. The government could otherwise make a comparative study of schools having state syllabus and others which follow CBSE curriculum on an experimental basis to arrive at a conclusion.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, Mr. Ramaiah said students would face difficulty in following the Central syllabus unless the standard of education was improved with emphasis on a practical approach to teaching and continuous evaluation. Instead of harping on CBSE syllabus, the government should strengthen the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) to improve the academic set up that exists in the State and strive to alleviate social conditions in which schooling is done by students.

In such a case, there would be no need to be obsessed with CBSE courses as the state syllabus was not inferior but for a few things to be streamlined. Therefore, the government should first help the SCERT in bringing about a qualitative improvement in school education before looking at alternatives.

The fact that a large number of students, who pursued state syllabus, fared in competitive examinations better than those, who passed out of CBSE schools, gives the message that it is the quality of education that matters but not brands. This is not to underrate the good qualities found in reputed private schools. ‘Functional literacy’ should be given due priority to help students build their strengths in all subjects including languages, the MLC added.
