VIZIANAGARAM: CITU will picket all mandal offices on June 20 in protest against the government’s indifference towards unorganized workers in the State. At a press conference on Saturday, union general secretary M. Srinivasa said in spite of various forms of protests in the past the Chief Minister had not made any effort to solve their problems. He demanded restoration of Janasri Bhima Yojana for rickshaw and auto drivers that was suspended after the Congress came to power, a comprehensive legislation extending ESI and PF facilities to mutha workers, payment of minimum wages and variable DA to employees in cinema theatres, bars and restaurants and other establishments covered under Shops and Establishments Act besides filling of all vacant posts in Labour Department. He said several workers in private establishments in Poosapatirega, Salur and Merakamudidam mandals had not been covered under ESI Act. At Garividi, a dispensary for workers employed in manganese mines was closed for unknown reasons, he said and demanded that ESI area office must be set up at Bobbili where many industries were being established by private entrepreneurs. In Jigiram jute mills at Salur only 957 workers out of 2,500 were extended the PF facility. Saying that employees working on contract have increased in government departments, Mr. Srinivasa said the Chief Minister had promised to abolish the system but went back on his assurance. CITU leader T.V. Ramana and district president of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Association M. Uma Maheswari were present.
