Disheartening, says Chetan

HYDERABAD: “It is disheartening to miss the chance to qualify for this year’s Olympics. I have no option except to look ahead. There is no point in rueing at the missed chances,” said national champion shuttler Chetan Anand.

In a chat with the media on the sidelines of a charity function, Chetan, who recently won the Spanish Open championship, recalled that he was ranked No. 21 in the world when the Badminton Association of India had problems with him. “They were not in a position to understand our situation then. We wanted to participate in some international events to improve our ranking with the primary objective of qualifying for Olympics. It is a different issue that they did not allow our entries,” the 28-year-old said.

“The BAI did not understand our viewpoint then. They were of the opinion that the focus should be on youngsters. Anyhow that is all over. Right now I wish to continue playing and aim at reaching the top 20 in the world,” he added.

Anand said that he would still dream of qualifying for the Olympics with the focus shifting to 2012.

“I know it is a long way off. And there are no specific long-term plans right now. Essentially, I wish to plan and review my programme every six months. I know that I was thinking too much about Olympics last year,” he said. — Principal Correspondent
