Inclusion in the Scheduled Castes category demanded Construction of dhobi ghats, residential schools sanction sought ANANTAPUR: Speakers at the district meet of Zilla Rajaka Vruthidarula Samakhya held here on Sunday alleged that washermen community was still being subjected to social discrimination in rural and urban area alike. Attacks and atrocities were also taking place against the community, they stated. The washermen community was being exploited particularly by landlords and the latter were also committing atrocities against the women of the community, district secretary of CPI D. Jagadish, former Mayor of Vijayawada L. Govindarajulu and senior party leader M.V. Ramana said at the meeting. A huge procession was taken out by the community before the commencement of the meeting. The speakers urged the government to register cases under the SC, ST Atrocities Act against those committing atrocities against the washermen community. As the community had not made any notable progress socially and economically due to low literacy rate the government should take up their welfare with special schemes, they demanded. They also demanded construction of dhobi ghats, sanction of residential schools and inclusion of the community in the Scheduled Castes category.
